Tango y Té of
Gainesville is pleased to announce our guest tango instructor,
coming to
Gainesville from California, Leia Gance (called Lee by most friends in
Orange County and Los Angeles County). Leia will stay with us from June 16
till
June 26 offering a series of group and private lesson. The lessons will
take place
at the Carroll residence.
Leia Gance, PhD in psychology, started ballet being 2 years old and two
years
later added gymnastics. At age 13 she became an
Olympic level gymnast, staying
at the Olympic team till 20 years
old. Ballet was a parallel endeavor all the
while. It
served as a foundation for all her later dancing. After turning
21
she traveled throughout Europe, Japan , and the United States as a
competitive ballroom/Latin dancer until she retired in 1999 in order to
devote
her energy to an exhausting study of Argentine Tango. Applying her
personal
standards of rigor and professionalism, she went to Argentina to
seek
out tango's "living legends" and learn from them all the
excellence
they had to offer. Her "mission" in Argentina consisted of
practicing
and mastering women's and man's steps and figures with the
following
tango legends: Toto Feraodo, Pocho Pissaro, Pajarito, Hector,
Victor
Romero, the younger Roberto Herrara, and Natalia Hills.
Those "living
tango legends," are known to everyone in Buenos Aires
(excepting
perhaps the young). Current tango stars such as Miguel Angel
Zotto,
Osvaldo Zotto, Roberto Herrera and others were trained by them.
They
are among 15 living legends that appeared in the
Argentinean-authored
Dance Encyclopedia of 20th century.
In her 10
days methodical lessons, Leia aims to enable each individual
dancer to obtain lasting improvement and attain a higher level of
tango
dancing. Lessons start out with students of all levels combined
in one
class. Students will flow through to the next class,
appropriate to
the individual student's level. Over the course of 10
days, the
average level of difficulty of the classes will increase.
The
beginners' level as well as the advanced level classes will
remain
until the end. Thus, each person will be able to build her/his
own
course, appropriate to raising her/his own personal level over
the
course of the 10 days.
To make this approach even more effective,
we offer free of charge the
use of Thuy's side room with the large mirror for
communal practice
time in between the classes. In addition, Leia will
be available for
private lessons throughout the 10 days.
Leia comes
with the highest recommendations from our own Jan Marczuk,
who had the
opportunity to dance with Leia when he was living in L.A.
Leia and Jan share
a similar inspired vision of elegance in tango. Jan
says: "Leia does
everything right, in terms of women's technique." He
believes that she
has reached a perfection without par in the way she
express herself in
dancing and in the details of her execution of each
movement. Jan's
wife, Ana Cristina, tells us that Leia is able to
make a large variety of
sophisticated embellishments with partners
dancing various styles, in both
close or open embrace, in an
exceptionally polished way . Leia has promised
to share with us her
method of exercises that enables this technique.
