Who is Jan
by David Chayes
Jan Marczuk came to Gainesville in 2005, and in short time has created a "school" of Argentine Tango by his teaching. The founding of the Tango y Té Milonga this year by 3 of his students is a result of this same inspiration.
Before coming to Gainesville, Jan Marczuk lived in Los Angeles, where he developed his dancing by asking himself constantly: "what are the things an ideal man would do?" and "what would an ideal man look like?" Now when you see him dance, what you see is his deeply personal portrait in dance, of the values he pursues and respects.
It is his mental clarity, and his lack of cynicism in asking these questions that have led him to his integrated technique and style of dancing. In addition, his way of teaching is highly individualized, responsive to the individual dancer. His ability to break down and study the details of every move is unmatched as far as I know. Ask him about any detail of the walk, and he will answer you, or find the answer.
